| Zusammenfassung: | The Greek myth of Amor and Psyche inspired artists to create numerous works of art since ancient times. One of the most popular and in its arrangement most sensuous artwork is the marble sculpture “Amor and Psyche” by Antonio Canova 1787 - 1793. A smaller copy of this famous masterpiece is in the ownership of the City Museum in Halberstadt. On the basis of the survey of inventory and its condition, this master thesis concerns methodological considerations relating to the degree of cleaning and completion and is a documentation of the realised conservation and restoration measures. The aim is to find a synthesis in the contradiction of an intended and a developed aesthetic, which enables the viewer to experience the sculpture in its original lightness and composition with consideration to the preserved condition. The carried-out restoration treatment was focused on cleaning the sculpture which had been exhibited outdoors for some time. Biological colonisation led to a corrosion of the stone surface. The resulting high light-dark contrasts interfere with the perceptibility in relation to the original plasticity, colour and effect of marble as a material. Beside the carried-out completion of the damaged surface, a completion of Amor’s wings with foreign material was discussed, which might lead to an approximation to the original composition. Furthermore, the written contributions include considerations of a conservational surface coating and a future presentation of the sculpture in the 'Schraube-Museum' Halberstadt. |
