Zusammenfassung: Plaster which has become detached is certainly one of the problems encountered most often by wallpainting-restorers. Their treatment is always a challenge, especially when it comes to wallpaintings on earthen plaster. The cavernous plaster in the Avalokiteshvara-temple of Wanla/Ladakh (India) is taken as a basis for all the studies and research done in this thesis. By illustrating the present state of research and current restoration-practices, different ways of treatment shall be determined. Most prominent among them are injection of liquid mortar, mechanical anchoring or even the invasive removal and transfer of the wallpainting. Aim of this thesis is to list different ways of treating the detached plaster and evaluate their applicability in this special case.
To achieve this aim, it was necessary to find out more about the original materials and the causes for the sustained damages. Also, more unusual ways of treating the detachment were explored; notably foam mortar, bio-calcification and the use of natural sponges as filling material.
