Zusammenfassung: The present Bachelor-Thesis addresses the conservation and possible restoration of a sculptural work of art dated into the 18th century, a putto including its fragmentary monochromy. This architectural sculpture is possibly the work of the German sculptor Gottfried Gröninger and is situated at the Kurmainzische Statthalterei in Erfurt (ethnarchy of the Elector of Mainz in Erfurt, Thuringia). The pediment of the putto, attached at a later date, is not part of this Bachelor-Thesis. However the pediment is listed here additionally and put into relation to the sculpture.
The intended presentation of this sculpture in a museum is the reason for the conservation and restoration, as it might become part of a permanent exhibition in the Angermuseum Erfurt (Anger Museum in Erfurt, Thuringia). In this context, the Bachelor-Thesis includes the inventory, a list of the types and causes for the deterioration as well as a treatment plan. Furthermore it contains two possible concepts for the presentation in the museum as a seminal point of the paper. The question of the original architectural context and classification of the sculptural work of art is a major focus of this paper. Another focus is the investigation of the structure of the paintwork to register the relative sequence of its monochromy in view of the archaeological context.
The intention is to conserve the sculpture following the submission of this Bachelor-Thesis.
