Zusammenfassung: This Master-thesis is dedicated to the conservation and restoration of a beaded head dress, originating from the Cameroon Grasslands and owned by the Grassi Museum of Ethnology located in Leipzig. In this context, the individual materials of the object were identified in order to meet their material specific requirements and to devise a conservation and restoration concept. In addition to applied techniques, it is important to highlight the cultural and historical background, resulting in the significance of the object used as a ritual headdress. The assumptions regarding the exact origin and date of the object are based primarily on the comparison of similar objects and the glass beads which are used on the object. The observed damages on the object, such as the condition of the glass beadwork and the complete lack of connection between upper and lower parts had been recorded and possible causes discussed.
The focus of this thesis is the conceptual development of appropriate measures for the conservation and restoration of an object made of combined materials. During this study technologies were developed. It was then possible to carry out exemplary tests in order to assess their suitability for conservation. Particular attention is paid to the treatment of damaged glass beads and the re-assembly of the separate components associated with the development of an individual supporting structure. The developed concept is the basis for the practical implementation of the object. Finally, preventive measures for adequate storage, presentation and handling are presented in order to obtain long-term preservation of the object in its entirety.
