Zusammenfassung: In the 19th century, a neo-Gothic roof was built over the nave of the Cathedral of St. Mary in Erfurt (Thuringia). In the course of the rebuilding of the roof, a mosaic representing the Virgin was placed at the new western gable in 1870. The mosaic, spanning 44 square metres, was made of glass and ceramic. It was manufactured by the studio of the Venetian industrialist Antonio Salviati, employing the then upcoming technique of indirect fabrication.
In 1968, the roof was rebuilt yet again. In the course of this action, the gable was fractionised into cut stones, a measure which included also the mosaic. The mosaic layer was then removed from the stone in 1994, using the strappo-technique. Afterwards, it was stored in adverse climatic conditions.
This Master-Thesis is concerned with an inventory of the current extant of the mosaic and with research into its condition and its manufacturing techniques. A cause-analysis was performed and a concept for the conservation and restoration of the fragments was established. This concept covers the relocation as well as the presentation of the object and focuses on the removal of the facing. The opportunities and limitations of supplementary material such as dyed epoxy resin are being emphasised. Finally, the concept thus established had been employed on selected fragments.
