Zusammenfassung: Between 1584 and 1590, Landgrave Wilhelm IV. of Hessen - Kassel built Wilhelmsburg Castle in Schmalkalden, one of the most important cities for the Reformation. The castle is considered one of the most eminent Renaissance-castles in Germany, due to its original spatial design and the large extant of preserved Renaissance mural paintings. This Master-thesis deals with the mural paintings of the "Landgrafengemach" in the west wing of the castle. Within the scope of this thesis, the paintings were the subject of visual investigations which were accompanied by microscopic and laboratory analyses. Furthermore, the different types of damages and their causes were documented and analysed. The results served as the basis for the development of a concept for the conservation and restoration treatments and possible preventive measures. The concept was visualised using an exemplary sample-area, in which various options for loss-compensation were compared.
