Zusammenfassung: | The epitaph of Hermann von Bendeleben is made of l light-coloured sandstone and shows typical Renaissance features. In the lower third the stone is characterized by severe loss of shape resulting from rising damp. Complex geological and hydrological conditions in the area encourage the high moisture input and promote salt efflorescence. These can be identified based on analyses as variations of magnesium sulfate which is a result of the use of dolomitic contaminated plaster aggregates in the construction and pointing mortar. Contrary to initial assumptions it is also the original location of the epitaph which could be proven based on architectural considerations. In addition, the epitaph contains no polychromy, the red color is a younger proteinbound coat. The conservation and restoration concept largely excludes the paint and aims its measures to preserve the stone itself. |
