Zusammenfassung: | The examined renaissance portal is a characteristic design element within the castle facilities in Redwitz a. d. Rodach in Upper Franconia. The portal, alongside a stair turret in the courtyard of the castle, is believed to have been built while reconstruction was on-going around 1525 after the Peasants´ War.The aedicule with emblem was presumably added during the time of the seigniory of Hans Georg von Redwitz from 1590 to 1616. Allegedly this work was done by Hans Fridmann.Over the centuries the portal withstood weather conditions for the most part, but in the middle of the 1960s due to the dense and very strained qualities of the new polychrome surface the ´´Untere Burgsandstein´´ as well as the ´´Coburger Sandstein´´ was peeled off and sanding. Furthermore the absence of a gutter on the turret and the damaged upper cornice on the portal increases the ingress of water. Right next to the sill the downspout of the bordering west wings’ gutter ends which caused an undermining of the foundation. As a result, the statics of the portal were affected in a way that caused fractures to occur. Therefore the main measures of conservation and restoration intended are the installation of a gutter on the stair turret, the underpinning of the foundation and the removal of the polychrome surface. As salts that are harmful to construction were detected in a mortar sample, a profiling of salt depth has to be drawn up and, if necessary, desalination carried out. Before the stone can be secured, a roof has to be attached, for it to dry under. Furthermore, as the surface of the column shaft on the right hand side is less than 10 percent and yet has a strong influence on the symmetry of the portal, it should be replaced. Implementation of the measures above is urgently needed to prevent the portal from dilapidation. Further measures of conservation and restoration are intended. |
