Zusammenfassung: When starting with the work on this Master-Thesis,there were three Japanese Urushi-boxes. Initial investigations revealed, however, that they were indeed Chinese lacquer boxes and finallyit turned out that they were in fact Chinese export goods of the 18thand 19th century. Because of the application of a variety of analytical methods, like X-Ray, gas chromatography / mass spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence, wood identification and UV-light analysis, it was possible, in the first part of this work, to define the provenance, age-classification and the region of manufacturing. In the second part,a series of tests were performed to find out possible fillings for lacquer-objects, focusing on coloured and cast Paraloid-foils as independent filling-material. Possibilities of loss-compensation and surface treatments were discussed in their relation to the ethics of conservation and cultural principles. Finally, all three boxes were treated based on these discussions, with the special challenge of creating a harmonised, uniform ensemble.
