Zusammenfassung: In the following work, the question is discussed how objects that were created
during the National Socialist period are dealt with in terms of conservation and restoration.
The focus is on movable cultural assets in the museum space, especially
paintings and sculptures. First, it examines what constitutes art from the Nazi era,
how it can be related to the Nazi system, and why it can be problematic.
Subsequently, restoration as a social construct and possible reasons for conservation/
restoration are discussed. It examines how curators deal with objects from the
Nazi era.
Two objects - "NS officials around the Gauleiter Otto Telschow" and "Lone skier in
the Upper Harz" - and the conservation and restoration measures carried out on
them are examined, contextualized and then compared with each other. Both objects
have a connection to the NS system, one being some closer and more obvious
than the other.
