Zusammenfassung: | In the present thesis, the phenomenon of hydrophobization of paper surfaces by microbial contamination is examined. In addition to paper sizingand the hornification of the fibers due to the effects of moisture, mold can be responsible for hydrophobization through the production of hydrophobins. The different capacity of water absorption, observed on two test objects, was investigated by a lot of measurements (contact angle measurement, FTIR-ATR, SEM, NMR, SEC-MALLS-RI). Based on the results, areas affected by mold are significantly more hydrophobic than unaffected areas. The contamination has led to discoloration, but not to considerable worse conditions of the cellulose at the molecular level. The hydrophobization was not caused by degradation mechanisms, but by the fungal structures that modify the paper´s surface. An inhomogeneous water absorption is responsible for object damage during wet treatments by restoration. A pre-treatment with an ethanol-water mixture (70%) enables a homogeneous wetting of the paper. At the same time, ethanol acts as a fungicide, by which is beneficial for paper regarding to remove mold. |
