Zusammenfassung: Controlling environmental conditions is a constant, idealistic goal in restoration. One that is, however, rarely achieved. Instead, valuable works of art are sometimes stored under extreme climatic conditions. This is where the present study comes in, posing the question: what would happen to treated wooden objects if, due to transport or careless negligence, they were exposed for several days to highly fluctuating environmental conditions, in which the wooden objects would have to both absorb and release moisture within 24 hours? What potential for damage do such conditions pose? And can these climate-induced deformations in the wooden objects be measured? Through a feasibility study, this work develops an experiment to visualise the climate-induced deformations of partially veneered and shellac-varnished wooden samples made of oak, spruce and walnut, as part of a cyclic climatic stress test, using a grazing light scanner, to quantify the extent of the deformation and to determine whether the timber samples suffer permanent deformation or damage. The findings are intended to promote the responsible handling of wooden objects.
