Sgraffiti: New insights into materials and technology of selected facades of pre- and post-war architecture
The first sgraffito decorations in Hildesheim date from the late 1930s. After the Second World War, efforts intensified to beautify facades with stucco decoration and numerous works were created, of which only a few have been placed under historic preservation status. Today, many of these plaster decorations have been painted over or hidden under further layers of plaster, while others will disappear in the coming years as a result of insulation projects. An appreciation of these facades requires knowledge about their original appearance. Strategies for their preservation need to be based on an awareness of materials and techniques. For this reason, the degree program in wall paintings and architectural surfaces at the HAWK has for the first time dealt with the materials and techniques of sgraffiti in Hildesheim by taking samples from several facades and investigating the mortar. It is therefore now possible to make initial statements about the plasters used, as well as the pigments, sands and bonding agents.
