Historical fragments in narrative environments

Das letzte Jahrzehnt war geprägt von einer Reihe an Experimenten computerunterstützter Visualisierungsmethoden in archäologischen Stätten im Herzen Roms, beginnend 2010 mit der Eröffnung der antiken römischen Häuser unter dem Palazzo Valentini neben dem Trajansforum, bis 2018, als die ''Seven Unique Places to Experience in Rome'' (S.U.P.E.R) im Forum Romanum eingeweiht wurden.
Dieser Beitrag konzentriert sich auf die Rolle der digitalen Technologien bei der Erhaltung,
Vermittlung und Ausstellung historischer Fragmente in diesen archäologischen Stätten, als verbindendes Element zwischen Vergangenheit und Zukunft. Dazu werden Fallstudien untersucht, wie jene der Domūs unter dem Palazzo Valentini, die Häuser von Augustus und Livia am Palatin und der mittelalterliche Komplex Santa Maria Antiqua im Forum Romanum.
Das verknüpfende Element der ausgewählten Beispiele ist die Beibehaltung des fragmentarischen Zustandes der archäologischen Überreste und Fresken. Die technische Möglichkeit der virtuellen Ergänzung fehlender Teile eröffnet im Bezug auf die Vermittlung und Kommunikation der historischen Fragmente ein breites Spektrum an Möglichkeiten. Obwohl ähnlich in ihrer Absicht, zeigen die ausgewählten Fallstudien jedoch viele Unterschiede in der Anwendung der Methoden und Werkzeuge der digitalen Visualisierung, die im Rahmen dieses Beitrages kritisch analysiert und verglichen werden.

The last decade has seen a series of experimentations with computer-based visualisation methods in assessment projects of archaeological sites in the heart of Rome, starting in 2010 with the opening of the Ancient Roman houses beneath the Palazzo Valentini, next to Trajan's Forum, until 2018 when the ''Seven Unique Places to Experience in Rome'' (S.U.P.E.R.) were inaugurated in the Roman Forum.
Focusing on a couple of case studies like the Domūs beneath the Palazzo Valentini, Augustus's and Livia's houses on the Palatine, and the medieval complex of Santa Maria Antiqua in the Roman Forum, this paper aims to analyse the role of the digital technologies in the preservation, mediation and display of historical fragments in archaeological sites, as a binding element between past and future, for the benefit of the present.
The linking element among the chosen examples is the aim of conserving the archaeological remains and frescoes. The technical possibility of virtually reintegrating the missing part opens a wide field of opportunities in terms of display, mediation and communication of the historical fragments. Though similar in their intents, the chosen case studies show many differences in the application of the digital visualisation methods and tools, which need to be critically analysed and compared.
