Overview:

Abstract: Vienna Medical University Department for Medical History’s collection of anatomical wax models in the Josephinum (1785) is a unique body of artwork. The exhibits’ fragility and presentation within historical surroundings raise important questions regarding preventative conservation strategies. Environmental factors such as climate, light, dust contamination, pollutants, vermin and mechanical stress have already caused irreversible damage to these precious objects, and remain risk factors. A risk analysis has shed light on the causes and effects of individual dangers. This work offers recommendations on how to cut the risk to the collection through simple methods requiring minimal intervention, thereby preventing further damage.
