Overview:
Abstract: The wallpaintings are dated 1230/ 40. They had been exposured and consolidated with starch glue in 1893. The aged starch glue, former watersoluble and clear, is now waterinsoluble, yellowish, brittle and decomposed by microorganisms. The paintlayer is going to be removed from the whitewashed surface. This is caused by swelling and shrinking of the starch glue through heavy fluctuations of relative humidity. The adhesion between glue film and paint layer is stronger than the cohesion within the paint layer and the adhesion between paint layer and whitewashed surface. Bevor start treating the surface, the paint layer has to be consolidated, in order to prevent further damage. There are several requirements for the adhesives: the adhesives should not form an insoluble starch glue film. When using solvents to remove the starch glue layer, these solvents should not change the effectness of the adhesives. Several materials and techniques to consolidat and clean the surface were tested on spezial test pieces. The technique of painting with a starch glue film and the damaging effects were imitated. Following materials were selected: consolidating the paint layer with Tetrahydroxysilane (Funcosil 300, by Remmers) fast hydrolized with deionized water. Swelling the starch glue coat with Ammoniumcarbonate poultice and then removing the starch coat mechanically. After using Ammoniumcarbonate the surface has to be neutralized with water poultice. At the same time salts can be reduced with this methode.
Using these methodes, the starch glue coat can be almost completely removed from the surface. The damaging effect of starch glue to the paint layer could be stopped.
