Abstract: The thesis in hand summarises the latest status of research concerning the use of synthetic fabrics as painting supports. Based on the extensive knowledge of industrial textile technology basics of the mechanical and physical properties of synthetic fibres and yarns are being presented and compared to properties of flax and cotton. Furthermore an overview of the historical development of the use of synthetic fabrics in painting is given and supplemented by examples. Finally typical ageing characteristics are being described, presented on the basis of exemplary damages and possibilities of conserving and restoring are being analysed.
