Overview:

Abstract: The thesis deals with the possibilities of cleaning surface treatment with particular
consideration of micro organism. The object of investigation is the Church St John the Baptist
in Inglesham, Wiltshire, South England. The condition of the masonry and of the wall
paintings is characterized by formation of crusts and contamination of dirt. In the ground area
are located conspicuous laminar green algae able to accumulate the humidity on the surface.
The deterioration is a primarily result of high concentration of water, which is caused from
both infiltration of humidity and hygroscopic salts. The extreme climate condition is
characterized by the frequent formation of water condensation on the wall surface during the
winter and leads an excessive moisture. The analyses of micro organism and different
cleaning test are based on pervious investigations. Additionally investigation were carried out
on samples with mortar and a special coating of titan dioxide, a photo-catalyst able to
produce a self-cleansing surface, for reducing the algae.
