Abstract: | The cultural heritage of the Himalayan region under Tibetan influence has only recently been part of increased scientific interest. There does not exist a concise confrontation of employed painting techniques on earthen plaster in a number of different Tibetan Buddhist temples. Wall paintings in secco-technique in the North of India and Nepal will be therefore compared regarding their painting techniques, pigments and binding media. Reference to both the traditional thangka paintings and the early Indian paintings will help to illustrate and classify techniques and materials. A critical comparison of the results gained from various investigations will form a basis for further interdisciplinary research projects. |
