Abstract: | The subject of the present master’s thesis is a cabinet (around 1710) Weikersheim Palace (Germany) which is decorated with a japanned lacquer surface. The primary aim of the master’s thesis is the analysis of the cabinet with focus on the original lacquer surface. This investigation showed that the surface is made of a black essence oil-lacquer on gesso, which is decorated with oil bound brass powder. Further a conservationconcept was developed. The initial point of this concept is to obtain an appearance that is more similar to the original one, which is detracted by later treatments. The concept was realized on a sample area where methods for the removal of a shellac-based varnish (with an isopropanol-gel) and a retouching (with aquarelle and Laropal A81) were developed. |
