Abstract: | The focus of this diploma thesis is the preservation of Thangkas from Nako, Himachal Pradesh, India. These paintings with textile frames are an essential part of Tibetan Buddhism. Two Thangkas from the Tribal Museum and Monastery are selected, which feature damages representative for the collection. Due to inadequate storage and handling losses, water stains and earthen deposits have occurred, that make cleaning and consolidation a difficult task. Research concerning cultural significance, technology and con- servation aims to clarify the circumstances leading to their desolate condition. The remote region of the Western Himalayas requires adapting the usual conservation practice for long term preservation success. |
