Abstract: | At the Cloister Wienhausen near Celle there exists with a total of 63 chests, one of the largest medieval chest collections in Lower Saxony in situ. In order to protect this collection for future generations, an assessment of the collection’s preventive conservation needs has been determined. A comprehensive and systematic environmental analysis and condition survey were developed to inform the assessment. In this way the chests’ conditions could be recorded and evaluated in terms of environmental factors of chemical and biological conditions, climate, pollution, moisture content of the wood and physical factors of support and structural integrity. Also evaluated were lighting conditions, maintenance habits, insects and micro-organisms, room use and fire protection The evaluation goes into detail on possible causes and consequences of the present conditions.
