Abstract: | The Preservation of Monuments and Historic Buildings of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) is so far a rather unexplored subject. This paper is a first attempt to describe the work of so called people's enterprises in the area of cultural heritage in the GDR. Outlined will be furthermore the fundamentals of the formation of such enterprises, their structure, and the operation method in a detailed manner. In this paper the Thomas-Müntzer-Memorial place, which is the castle of Allstedt near Sangerhausen in today’s Saxony-Anhalt, is used as an example to explain the work of one of these preservation enterprises. This paper is predominately based upon unpublished information and extensive interviews from contemporary witnesses of scientific and practical preservation of cultural heritage in the GDR. |
