Abstract: | Subject of this work are three Post-Reformation canvas paintings from St. John's Church in Lüneburg. Two of the paintings show a unique, original set-up, however, are severely disturbed in their readability by overlying dirt and darkened varnish. The original set-up and varnish on the third painting were removed during a restoration, so that the paintings are in a very different condition today. The work includes a comprehensive analysis of the context that brings the reader closer to the Protestant understanding of galleries with image programs and performs an art historical context and the object history. Based on a comprehensive study on engineering and condition, concrete recommendations for the conservation and restoration treatment to are given. The focus of the concept are the consideration of a decrease in the darkened varnish and reflections on a new clamping system. |
