Abstract: | Conserving and restoring items of automotive cultural heritage poses an exceptional challenge, because of previous handling as well as the use of plastic materials. The introduction of plastics as a manufacturing material for automotive interiors in the 1960s is demontrated by using as an example the Ford Taunus 17M P3 (1964) dashboard cover, which is made of an ABS/PVC blend. Typical damage patterns for these covers are cracking and tearing, and restoration of such damage is shown in a sequence of experiments using epoxy glues and testing the adhesive effect achieved. A final discussion addresses the practicability of utilizing the test results for restoring old dashboard covers. |
