Theresa Neuhoff: The use of stencils in panel paintings from late medieval Cologne back

Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The use of stencils can be demonstrated on several works of art that have been investigated in a research project focussing on Cologne panel painting of the fifteenth century. Remarkable is, that stencils were not only used as a tool of the gilding techniques but were furthermore employed for the painting technique. In addition to that, their use is presumed for the process of sketching and underdrawing. Based on the study of written sources and the technological examination, reconstruction were made.
