Abstract: As a conceptual method in art making the viewer participation has become popular among artists since the second half of the 20th century. This resulted in objects which were meant to be experienced by the recipients through actions, letting them partake in the artistic process. Beginning with a short overview of the development of the museum, the thesis tries to capture the conflicts that arise when those institutions want to present works, which actually have to happen. A modified decision-making model shall aid the systematic quest for adequate ways of exhibiting such works, considering their values and meaning as well as their current context. Three participative works from artists of the Fluxus circle Ay-O, Yoko Ono and Takako Saito – all of them are belonging to the collection Schnepel of the Neues Museum Weserburg – serve as case studies to work out a proposal for their presentation, taking their values and context into account.
