Niklas Underwood: Ultrasonic tomography in the conservation of marble - possibilities and limitations in the localization and resolution of structural disturbances back

Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The measurement of ultrasonic velocity is an established method for non-destructive diagnostics of objects made of Carrara marble. Based on the values of the transit velocity the state of preservation can be characterized. The data from many velocity measurements can be used to calculate a tomography.

In this thesis the physical and mathematical fundamentals for the calculation of tomographies are explained. Also the way of calculation with the algorithm RAI-2D will be described. Measurements on test specimens of Carrara marble with artificially added structural disturbances are carried out. These measurements show how accurate the tomographic reconstruction is.
