Abstract: This Bachelor thesis summarizes fundamental historical information about the formation of the notaryship and the notary signs. Several objects out of the early modern period, of the collections of the city archive Hildesheim, are presented and described by art historical point of view. As part of the work nondestructive examinations and tests are performed and findings analyzed, to get new information about the historical manufacture of notary signs. Typical damages are explained and historical methods of conservation presented. The last part of the thesis names different possibilities of conservation and restoration and values them by ethical guidelines. Finally there is a recommendation for further treatments.
