Abstract: | Conceptual works by the German sculptor Reiner Ruthenbeck (*1937 in Velbert) can include dark red fabrics. The artist’s intentions as well as specific material choices and techniques are documented by gathering information from artist interviews, literature and the investigation of ten objects owned by museums. Essential characteristics like colour and surface appearance are specified A short digression on documenting colours of contemporary fabrics in art enhances the results. An evaluation of the completed documentation in consideration of the conservation of conceptual art is used as a base to formulate conservation strategies. These will include the preservation and the possible means of conservation when dealing with fabrics in a conceptual work by Reiner Ruthenbeck. A brief case study of the work „Aufhängung III (mit Platte)“, 1969/ 1992 delivers information about possible condition alterations and allows the assessment of a conservation concept. |
