Wibke Ottweiler: Conservation and restauration of the right wing of a Gothic altarpiece from the church of Langenchursdorf / Examination and discussion of the restorability of the polychrome sculpture “Kruzifix aus Etzdorf, Sachsen, SAV. 0859” of the State Art-Collection Dresden back

Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The altarpiece has suffered severe damage during previous diminution and storage under inappropriate conditions. Besides conservation and restauration, a treatment concept was developed to stabilize the fragile construction of the right wing.

The crucifix holds three paint layers of different campaigns. Due to fire effects the two top paint layers were severely damaged. The main task comprised the examination of the layer structure and its condition in order to assess feasibility and consequences of removal of the damaged paint layers.
