Abstract: The present thesis deals with the corrosion phenomenon on stained glass windows called
Craquelé (crizzling). First of all it was tried to find out a definition for the term. An overview as
well as a detailed description of characteristic phenomena was done by help of original samples
from different stained glass windows. This chapter is followed by a critical discussion about the
probable causes for the damages. The negative influence of very high and low relative humidity
on crizzled glasses was pointed out by tests on original samples. To get an overview about
present conservation methods and materials it was carried out a survey all over Europe and the
USA. Different materials for the consolidation of internal fracturing by infiltration were tested in
different manners. For this purposes artificially samples had to be prepared. The tests showed
that some products are suitable. But for all the materials compromises have to be made, when
consolidating crizzeld stained glasses. There is need for research for more effective conservation
materials, especially because of the large number of stained glass windows that will have to be
preserved within the next decades suffering from crizzling.
