Abstract: | The diploma thesis “The von‐Hopffgarten‐Collection integrated into the Collection of the Castlemuseum Sondershausen. Examination, preservation and restoration treatments of the painting on canvas with the title: Portrait of a man; probably by Maximilian Ernst von Hopffgarten, 1769” contains a short historical part, drawing techniques and scientific examinations and information concerning the painting. The focus point of the treatment concept was the historical and scientific aspect (history, actual stock and preserving condition). The preservation (the textile support and the painting’s surface) and restoration treatments of the oil painting on canvas were done in accordance with their historical value. The original substance (varnish, paint layers and stretching system) of the painting was trying to be preserved as much as possible. Furthermore, with the treatments, the content should be reactivated. For a possible future presentation in the museum, a discussing of the framing and the protection of the back side of the painting followed. The nearly life‐sized portrait, oil painting on canvas, 158 x 116,5 cm, property of the Castlemuseum Sondershausen was painted by a local artist called Johann Ludwig Meil (1729‐1772). The man in the painting was in a close relationship with the dynasty of Schwarzburg‐Sondershausen, which is also represented in the museum and the castle. |
