Abstract: | For the exhibition "Ars Sacra – Art treasures of the middle ages in the Salzburg museum" (16.12.2010 – 29.01.2012) an appraisal of the condition of the exhibits was carried out. It was planned to include the so‐called "Predella of Werfen" (1462/63) in the exhibition. The Predella consists of three single panels, which had been extensively restored during the 19th and 20th century. These restorations had to be reviewed, which formed part of my Diploma. The aim was to analyse and document the changes and instaurations, using scientific methods, such as pigment‐ and binding agent analysis, cross‐section and infrared images, making enquiries. Furthermore, the historical context and primary presentation were investigated. A conservationand restoration concept for all three panels was developed and exemplified on one of them, the Barbara‐ and Katharina‐panel. After finishing these treatments the panels can be part of the exhibition again. |
