Abstract: This Bachelor thesis presents a survey of the extent and the condition of a piece of jewellery from the collection of the Neues Grünes Gewölbe in Dresden. The object is a kind of a Baroque goldsmith-work in form of a miniature architecture. Besides art-historical studies and a chronological classification, the main emphasis is the determination of the different materials which were used to create this object. The base-structure, in the form of a portal, is made of fire-gilded silver with applied minerals, shell cameo and enamel work. A small swan in a pond forms the centre of this ensemble; its body is made of a kind of mollusc pearl.
The examination of the object and the specific features of the individual materials are being explained summarily. Based on these results and on further analyses, it was possible to make conclusions about the reasons for the damage. The resulting considerations about the conservation and restoration of the object are also being presented. A particular emphasis of the thesis is laid on the phenomenon of the corrosion of calcareous objects, the reasons for which will be explained in detail. Furthermore, the necessity of the integration of missing areas will be discussed and a short overview is given of cleaning methods for fire-gilded silver objects.
