Abstract: | The St. Lorenzkirche in Schöningen (Lower Saxony) harbours a rare example of a well-preserved room decoration from the beginning of the 20th century. The murals were created in the years 1901 to 1904 by the decorative painter Adolf Quensen, and since then shape the appearance of the impressive building. Over the past 20 years, the condition of wall surfaces has deteriorated rapidly. To prepare for a restoration of the eastern sector of the church this examination was carried out in the context of a work on admission to the diploma in the subjects of restoration techniques and procedures in the field of study wall painting/architectural surface. The aim of this paper was the ascertainment of the painting technique of Adolf Quensens and older decoration phases of the interior. |
