Overview:

Abstract: In the context of the present master thesis and with an inter- and transdisciplinary approach, for the first time, non-destructive ultrasonic surface measurements at wall painting objects has been evaluated with regard to the physical and restorative analyzability.
The medieval wall painting „Der Kindermord“ („The Child murder“) in the Schleswig cathedral’s cloister (called „Schwahl“) is the study’s object of main interest because it is optically heavily affected by an organic coating which has been added later in its history. Furthermore, a focus was set on the analysis of the data from a second object - the „Dionysisfries“ at the „Villa dei Misteri“ in Pompeii - provided by a previous series of measurements.
With respect to an inventory and status detection, first aim was to evaluate each object independently and objectively. Thus, at the ‚Schwahl‘, it was focused on the detection of the medieval wall painting’s simple structure as well as on the material properties of coated and uncoated sections. Additionally, it has been evaluated in what extend the efficiency of cleaning is comprehensible and controllable by this method.
Due to the significant more complex nature of the used technologies and materials for the roman wall paintings in Pompeii, it was possible to discuss and criticize in what extend the use of Rayleigh waves allows a registration of these materials.

Finally, based on a common technical comparison of the objects, applications, issues and limits the use of non-destructive ultrasonic surface measurements for painted, plastered surfaces has been discussed.
