Abstract: This Bachelor-Thesis deals with the manneristic paintings in the basement of tower of the Magdalenenkirche in Zella-Mehlis (Thuringia).
The objectives of this thesis were to discuss the reasons for the paintings’ deterioration by studying their extent and condition, and to establish ideas for a possible concept of conservation and restoration measures.
As extant and damages of the entire mural had not yet been researched and documented, the focus of this study was to draw-up an inventory and to map damages to the plaster and the paint layer.
Through radio-diagnostic and microscopic analysis, climate studies and humidity-monitoring, it was possible to provide evidence of several different processes of damages to the wall painting. A semi-quantitative salt-analysis in the plaster (plaster II) proved the existence of harmful salts.
Important preconditions for the implementation of the concept of measures are thus provided through the extensive new knowledge about the manneristic murals in the basement of tower of the Magdalenenkirche to Zella-Mehlis.
