Overview:

Abstract: The detached wall-paintings of the collection Veste Coburg includes medieval subjects of unknown provenance. The main subject, with a large illustration of a knight-battle-scene, is an impressive example of medieval artistry. As a part of a former Nazi-Art-Collection they were later administrated by the new German government. After decades of storing, intensive investigations are carried out by the Conservation Department of the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt.
Research in techniques and motivations for transferring wall-paintings are the premier part of this work. The examination of the painting technique as well as historical research revealed new information about date and origin. The main part of the work is the development of a new stable support for the large-sized 'strappo' and its ancient textile backing. Based on the planned measures, the treatments were carried out on a sample-fragment.
