Abstract: The sculptor Wilhelm Groß created 1929 for the portal of the protestant Luther Church in the south of Halle four monumental evangelists. The expressive sculptures are made of concrete. The condition of the figures required 1984 the removal from the portal. Since then, they have been waiting for a restoration beside the church. The harmful phenomena are due to the material and its processing. In contrast to natural stone, concrete is subject to constant chemical transformation, which can be recognized as a source of damage in addition to weathering. The presented work deals with this transformation process with regard to surface and reinforcement corrosion and the resulting substantial damage patterns. In addition, the value of monuments made of concrete as well as the discussion of copy, reconstruction and supplementation as a preservation practice are discussed. As a product of this work suggestions and ideas are given on the basis of scientific investigations and a versatile inventory for a later conservatory and restorative conception.
