| Abstract: | The object addressed in this Bachelor-Thesis is a sculpture originating from Andean Peru. It was made in the late 20th century and represents ´´Arcángel Miguel´´ (Archangel Michael). However, its exact purpose could not be identified with absolute certainty. Investigations of the materials concluded the sculpture is not, as previously thought, made of papier mâché in combination with ot her materials, but is made of gypsum combined with other materials. Although the sculpture seems to be in good shape, it displays some defects nonetheless. Through microscopic, UV-, IR- and X-ray-investigations combined with analyses of pigments, polished cross-sections and binding agents, some insights into the sculpture could be gained. They concern (among others) the materials on hand, the artistic structure and changes caused by restorations during the 20th century. Through examining extant and condition of the sculpture, a concept of measures could be established. |
