| Abstract: | This Bachelor’s thesis examines different structures and materials used in springback bindings from the 19th and 20th centuries. The main focus is on identifying chronological and local developments and differences between handmade and factory-made books to improve the description and analysis of historical bindings. Approximately twenty sources, dating between 1800-2023 in both German and English, dealing with the production of springback bindings were analysed. As evidence, 19 historical bindings from the SUB Göttingen were examined and reviewed against the literature. A table was developed to systematically record the relevant structural details. It was possible to identify potential “weak points” in certain structures or materials by analysing damage patterns. This analysis shows that in 19th century Germany diverse springback variants were used, which differ from common modern structures. The main differences are the spring’s shape, the width of the joint, and the lever attachment. Furthermore, the English and German sources demonstrate different techniques for making the spring and connecting the lever and boards. The most common failure point of the books examined was the use of creased cardboard (the so called “gebrochener Rücken”, an early German version of a spine inlay) to attach the spring to the book block; in many cases, it was torn along the joint, which severely restricted the spring’s mechanism. The variety of historical structures and materials is challenging for conservators to develop and adapt conservation and restoration treatments. |
