Abstract: The plaster ceiling in “Villa Venice” in Trier is a high quality example of late 17th-century Italian stuccowork, with freely-modelled stucco applied using mortars based on lime and gypsum. Another component of the plaster is magnesium, which derives from the use of local dolomitic limestone. The combination of gypsum and magnesium lime has led to a severe deterioration due to salt crystallisation. The study of these decay mechanisms was the main emphasis of the dissertation, furthermore the development of injection grouts and completion mortars and the testing of methods to consolidate friable areas of stucco and to achieve a salt conversion in situ. For that purpose, solutions of calcium- and bariumhydoxide were tested as well as ethylsilicates and dispersions of calciumhydroxide in alcohol.
