Three methods for the regeneration of sticky magnetic tapes have been tested in this study: drying via a desiccant, freeze-drying and baking. Only baking has been successful, because it was able to put the tapes in a playable state. In the theoretical part, the history, composition and the most important degradation mechanisms were investigated. Hydrolysis of the binder is the most severe type of damage, but could be inhibited, if moderate temperature and humidity for storage are choosen. Recommendations for longtrem storage are therefore given in this work.
