Overview:

Abstract: During the excavation of a Middle Kingdom palace in Egypt in the 1960`s, large areas of adobe walls were exposed. Through the unhindered influence of the weather and other deterioration factors, the walls are now severely damaged and require conservation. In the study an example section of adobe wall from the excavation site in Tell Basta was selected and investigations undertaken to assess the deterioration mechanisms. The examination process sought to determine which conservation methods can be employed given the uncontrolled weather conditions. The initial process is to discover the damage causing factors and assess the condition of the object. Different loam materials were examined to determine their suitability. Finally the influence of electrolyte additives on loam was assessed.
