Overview:

Abstract: This paper presents a picture, entitled "Portrait of a young man", by an unknown artist of the Oldenburg region (North Germany). It is a pastel on parchment and was painted in the early 19th century. The history of the picture and its art-history are examined, and its technological aspects as well as its condition are described in detail. Next, a proposal of restoration is developed and the implementation of the restoration is closely documented. The aim of the restoration is to take the necessary measures, so the picture can be put on display without any further damage to its material. The stages of restoration concern the detachment of the pastel from its damaged stretcher, the removal of impurities and micro organisms, the smoothing out of warped areas, the improvement of the mounting and glazing. Recommendations for preserving pastels on parchment and possible methods of smoothing out warps from parchment pictures and of mounting and glazing them are made. Finally, special aspects of this genre in general are pointed out.
