Hanna Grabner: Examination, conservation and reshaping of dry archaeological leather as exemplified by three so-called "Coptic" shoes back

Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: Close examination of the technological composition, damage and history of three "Coptic" shoes provide profound information on the condition of these water sensitive burial finds. Possible causes of the damage assessed are discussed together with the results of scientific analysis to explain deterioration processes. Different methods of reshaping dry archaeological leather are presented and their risks and long-term effects are examined. A concept for conservation and storage is developed and executed for each shoe individually, considering the particular state of preservation as well as future storage conditions.
