Overview:

Abstract: This thesis examines the meaning of identity and authenticity in the context of time-based media installations, using the example of Otto Piene´s kinetic installation Fleurs du Mal. Time-based media installations do not exist as static objects, but unfold in space and time, giving them both a spatial and a performative character. One way to approach these com-plex works of art is to determine their work-defining properties in order to understand their identity and to determine the limits of their variability. For this purpose, the work-defining properties of the installation Fleurs du Mal are determinded using the history of the work and an iterationreport. The analysis of the installation Fleurs du Mal showed that the different components of the installation have different meanings for the work, which are however to be considered as subjective and context-dependent. By considering its subjective and performative nature, determining the work-defining properties can preserve the authenticity of a work of art in its conservation and presentation.
