The issue of colouring and texture constitutes one of the most essential problems concerning the conservation of an elevation. The most important stages in the field of elevation colouring involve conducting series of historical, architectonic and technological investigations. As it is widely known, the original interior as well as exterior colouring is scarcely preserved in cavities, under accumulation of layers, repaintings, later puttying, or accidental materials. The knowledge and the ability to use indirect sources, such as construction treatises, architectonic drawings, pictorial views, or other analogies in the investigation and determination of the very original colouring, make up the only and reliable altemative while deciding upon conservation or restoration of a facade. Der Bürgerliche Baumeister (1790) published in Gotha takes a particular position in the field of colouring. Its author, Friedrich Christian Schmidt, a German architect, created the only work of this kind, where he devoted a chapter to painting the facades of
town tenement houses. He offered practical advice and hints formulating the contemporary fashion and architectonic tastes. However, while making the final decision about the colouring of a facade, one should choose a method which would restore particular elements of a historical object in the most adequate way
with respect to its original form. Such a method of facade colouring should involve restoring by means of the old technique and material, historical composition and colouring range. The architecture historian should decide about colouring. He is to determine the colours and their composition. 'Brave concepts of an artistpainter' should not be favoured. Unaware of historical object complexity or contradictory to the colouring, this concept may become a greater violation of the intemal structure of an object, whereas a less daring historical concept based on profound knowledge may serve its purpose.
