The coating of wood and wood-based materials with paints and varnishes is used for aesthetic reasons; on the other hand, these coatings inhibit the penetration of water or moisture in general in order to prevent biological or weather-related degradation of the wood. These coatings often show deficiencies in adhesion; therefore pretreatment (sanding, application of primers) of wood or wood-based materials is necessary. The application of gas discharges (plasmas) to improve the adhesion properties of polymer surfaces has been a common method for decades in the plastics processing industry. Recent research points out that the application of plasmas to surfaces of wood and wood-based materials is an innovative pretreatment method for the adhesion enhancement of adhesives and paints or for the improved absorption of adhesives. Surface energetic investigations demonstrate the targeted modification of wood and wood-based materials for specific applications. Scanning force microscopy and photoelectron spectroscopic investigations shows that air-plasma treatment causes an increase in surface roughness and positively influences in the surface chemistry for subsequent coating processes. Tensile tests and shear tests on plasma-treated and subsequently coated or bonded wood-based materials show a significantly increased adhesive strength. In addition, protective layers can be produced directly on wood (-based material) surfaces by means of plasma technology.
In recent years, several innovative devices based on the principle of a gas discharge have been developed at the HAWK. These devices can be used to treat a wide variety of material types of wood, whether as chip, solid wood or veneer. The devices include both large-scale systems and mobile hand-held devices, as well as devices with specific applications which allow the treatment of occluded cavities, e.g. undercuts.
